Jacque Philippe that talks about what it means to live in freedom as sons and daughters of God and how this freedom can become greater than the circumstances of our lives.The first of the nine beatitudes of Matthew said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." The world is constantly trying to define us—it tries to tell us who we are. Our successes, belongings, talents, people in our lives, our jobs, culture and technology, all these things tends make us who we are. We beclothed ourselves with these things and we are tempted to find our identity in them. But again, "Who Is God and Who Am I?". To understand what it means to be truly free and live in freedom as sons and daughters of God, we have to keep this question before us. We have to let go of other worldly things and not be afraid of staying in the place of spiritual poverty before the Lord. A Holy Week I Will Never Forget

A great way to make this Lent even better spiritually is to offer up not only something you chose, but also to offer up your inconveniences. Give God those moments when you’re stuck in traffic, or when someone says something bitter to you, or when you have to run an errand you just don’t want to run. Offer up those inconveniences that you didn’t choose, and God will make you stronger in them.

Intentionally receive these moments, and let them provide the opportunity to die to self. The Lenten commitment we chose is an active mortification, but these inconveniences you didn’t ask for are passive mortifications. They’re powerful because we have no control over them, and yet we can have control over what we do with those moments. Accepting these passive mortifications is a way for us to grow in freedom, because through them we learn to accept and live graciously in the moments that would otherwise have control over us.

In the words of St. Paul:

“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church” (Colossians 1:24).

Augustine and the Quest for Self-Knowledge | Prof. Michael Foley

Fr. Mike says the key to making decisions together is distinguishing between preferences and principles. If the reason you’re favoring a choice is a matter of principle, it is your duty to lead the other person in that decision to the truth of that principle. If the choice you’re favoring is just a matter of preference though, charity suggests that you default to the preference of the beloved one involved in the decision instead.

Fr. Mike uses going to church as an example. It is a matter of principle that we have to go to Sunday Mass and worship God the way he tells us to, so if someone tells us going to a Catholic Mass is just our preference we can tell them as a matter of fact it’s not. However, if the issue is which church we go to for Sunday Mass, say St. Francis’ Church or St. Andrew’s, more often than not that is just a matter of preference.

How to Make Decisions Together

When we show devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, we fulfill her prophecy that “all generations will call me blessed.” The Catechism clearly shows us how such devotion does not compete with devotion to God, but in fact fosters adoration of God. Day 48: Creation in Order (2026)

What's one thing you can do that will move you towards being holier, healthier and happier? Seriously… take a second. Bet something came to mind. Right? Sometimes we overcomplicate the plan. When there's a lot to change, or the change is going to be rough, it's tempting to bail on starting. It's easy to avoid doing the hard things, even the little hard things. Maybe especially the little things—but that's how holiness happens. Choosing to do the small hard thing, for Jesus, over and over and over again. You got this! With God's grace, you can totally do hard things. That realization—that we're capable of persevering—gives us the confidence that we have what it takes to gladly do what needs to be done. So stay simple. Keep the main thing the main thing. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." All of all three. Because keeping Christ firmly in the center of your life—the focus of all your energy and the motivation for all your choices—is the only sustainable way to live radically for him for a whole lifetime.

There are so many things vying for our attention these days. After making ends meet we maybe have an hour or two per day where we have the opportunity to participate in activities that we personally enjoy. Before you know it you are on YouTube learning about organic carrot farming or motorcycles and then those few precious moments are gone. Oftentimes, this is when we either win or lose the battle in our relationship with the Lord. Spiritual boredom doesn&#39;t happen overnight. You slide into it until you finally realize how much your relationship with the Lord has suffered. Siegel who brought together more than 40 professionals, more than 40 experts from a wide range of scientific disciplines to discuss and demonstrate how the mind, brain, and relationships integrate to influence and change each other.  </li><li>Questions that IPNB asks and addresses these questions, five questions standing out to me:  <ol><li>What is the human mind?</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>How does the mind develop?</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>What does the human mind look like when it's doing really, really well, when it's functioning optimally?</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>How can we encourage, nurture and cultivate a healthy, strong mind?</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>How can we take what we've learned about the mind and find practical applications that make a real difference in our daily lives? <ol><li>Guidance for how to live our lives</li><li>Pointers for what may need to change in our thinking and behavior to help us live more fully.  </li><li>Very practical -- not just academic ivory-tower, pie-in-the-sky speculation -- Daniel Siegel really wants IPNB to bring healing, growth and well-being to people.  I like that.  I'm into that. </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> </li><li>What IPNB is Not  <ol><li>Not a therapy.  <ol><li>Not a way of doing therapy.  Rather, a way of understanding that can inform different schools of therapy. </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>IPNB is not a discipline.  It's not a specific branch of knowledge. </li></ol></li><li> </li><li>Rather, IPNB is a framework that draws on all the different disciplines with a rigorous and structured approach to studying things – not just science – They all have a place in the framework.  <ol><li>It's a consilient framework:  <ol><li>Consilience:  E. Advent - Will You Be Ready?

Fr. Mike says there are four things you should ask yourself before expressing your opinion: why, what, who, and how. 

First, evaluate why you’re expressing this thought. Is it because it’s the right thing to do, or is it because you are trying to one-up someone?

Second, what is your opinion? Is it something true, like a principal, or is it just a preference?

Third, who are you talking to and what is your relationship to this person?

Lastly, how are you expressing yourself? Even if you are totally in the right, the way you say it is of the utmost importance in order for people to listen. 

If you consider these questions when expressing your opinion or trying to correct someone, you’ll be much more likely to find a willing listener.

Day 143: Amen (2025)

Last week, we talked about Holy Communion being a gift and not a right owed to us by God. This may sound like the Church doesn’t want you if you’ve sinned, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is, every one of us is in need of repentance, and there is not one person on this earth who isn’t a sinner. What we need to examine within ourselves is how we can realign our souls back to God and enter a union with him in the Holy Sacrament. 

Today, Fr. Mike clarifies some points he made in his last video about Holy Communion, and explains why the Church has always wanted your heart—especially in the midst of sin.

I explore the etiology or the origin of “borderline personality” and the underlying unmet attachment needs that fuel borderline dynamics. I describe different subtypes of borderline presentations and explore the types of partners to whom those with borderline dynamics are romantically attracted. From there, I describe five major treatment approaches and briefly discuss an outcome study. In closing, I review some suggestions for living with someone who presents with borderline characteristics.

I’m clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski with Souls and Hearts at soulsandhearts.com.  It is great to be here with you.  This is Episode 10 and its April 20, 2020, entitled Your Catholic Body and this Crisis:  Bodyset.  Today we are focusing on the body.  Your Catholic body.  Does that sound weird to you?  That your body is Catholic?  I bet it does.  Why?  Is your body not Catholic?  We’re going to get ito all at that body stuff in today’s episode.[cue music]ReviewWe’re in the middle of a program about building resilience in this crisis, so that we are ready to take advantage of the opportunities God is giving us to grow, to grow spiritually of course, but also to grow psychologically, to grow in faith, but also to grow in our human formation, in the natural realms.  Episode 4 – the Four Pillars of Resilience  Mindset, Heartset, Bodyset, Soulset.  That episode introduced the four major domains, the four major parts of us.  Mind, Heart, Body, Soul.  We need these four areas of our lives ordered so that we can be resilient and adapt well in a crisis.  If you’re new to the podcast, you can listen to each episode in its own, it can stand alone, but remember they all hang together into a program to strengthen your resilience to live out our duties of state, to live our your vocation.  So if you have the time and interest, it’s great to go back to episode 4 and work your way up to this one.  In Episodes 5 and 6 we got into mindset.  Our mindset is the position of our intellect, and how we habitually apply reason to our situation, to our experiences.  In Episode 7 we moved into heartset.  Our heartset consists of the dispositions or the orientation of our heart, the emotional and intuitive ways of our heart.  We discussed the huge mistake of neglecting our emotions, the costs of that neglect, and how to get in touch with our emotions again.  In Episode 8 we had a brief detour and we discussed reconciling psychology and Catholicism, and I shared the story of how I got into the field of psychology.In Episode 9 we got back into heartset, with another huge issue, the issue of being overwhelmed by emotion, and how to prevent that and with that we wrapped up our initial look at heartset.  So now we’re continuing and we’re working with a new pillar – our bodies.   How do our bodies impact our capacity to cope in a crisis.  That’s the deep dive for us today.  So just a review from Episode 4 – what is bodyset again, Dr. Peter?  Glad you asked.  Bodyset is how our body affects us, how our physical reactions impact us and our dispositions and inclinations.  We are embodied beings, composites of body and soul.  Our physical bodies have a huge impact on us.   The state of our body, our relationship with our body, that’s bodyset.  Here is the main message:  We need to listen to our bodies and respond in love to them.  What does that mean, Dr. Peter?  We need to listen to our bodies?  Aren’t we supposed to subjugate our bodies?  Aren’t we supposed to control them, keep them from leading us into sin?  Are not our bodies the “flesh” that St. Paul condemns so often in his letters?And this business of loving our bodies?  What does that mean?  Sounds fishy.  Sounds dangerous.  So let me back up a bit and tell you how I as a psychologist got interested in the body.Episode 8 – told you a bit of my story.  Pretty unimpressed with the clinical training I was getting, really uncertain about how to ground psychotherapy in a Catholic worldview.  And that was so central to me.  I never wanted to lead anyone astray morally or spiritually Program not helpful at all.  I also was far from convinced that psychotherapy was really effective.  So I clinically I got into health and rehabilitation psychology  -- I could see the benefit in that.  Pain control, helping people stop smoking, weight loss stuff. Helping people sleep better, helping people recover and cope with traumatic bodily injuries.  But it was all about symptom management and habit control.  And I was interested in the meaning of the bodily symptoms and the body habits that troubled people.  Nailbiting  Symbolic meaning.  Anger.  8 months.  Here is the main message:  We need to listen to our bodies and respond in love to them.  Why.  Because our bodies are us.  My body is a part of me.  Because we tend to be down on the body.  Lots of people hate their bodies.  Body getting a bad rap – the flesh.  Jansenism, Manicheanism  The good part is the soul (which is composed of light) and the bad part is the body (composed of dark earth).  JPII Theology of the BodyThere are many references to “the flesh” in the New Testament, especially in the letters of St. Paul. The phrase is confusing to those who think it synonymous with the physical body. While Scripture many times uses the word “flesh” to refer to the physical body, when it is preceded by the definite article, it usually means something more. Only rarely does the biblical phrase “the flesh” refer only to the physical body (e.g., John 6:53, Phil 3:2, 1 John 4:2).From Mgsr. Charles Pope:  What, then, is meant by the term “the flesh”? Most plainly, it refers to the part of us that is alienated from God. It is the rebellious, unruly, and obstinate part of our inner self that is always operative. It is the part of us that does not want to be told what to do. It is stubborn, refuses correction, and does not want to have anything to do with God. It bristles at limits and rules. It recoils at anything that might cause one to be diminished or something less than the center of the universe. The flesh hates to be under authority or to yield to anything other than its own wishes and desires. It often wants something simply because it is forbidden.OK Dr. Peter, so I have the distinction between the flesh and the body.  St. Paul was not condemning our physical bodies when he discusses the flesh.  We need to listen to our bodies?  And this business of loving our bodies?  What does that mean?  Sounds fishy.  Sounds dangerous. Recognize what my body is saying.  Poker Tells (my knee, jaw clench, high neck pain, low back pain)  GI problems, headache, yoke pattern on neck and shoulders.  Symbolism.  Psychodynamic work.  Caring for your body.  Neglecting it.  Not showering, fuzzy bunny slippers, shaving. The fact of the Assumption is the greatest reminder that all those who have died in Christ are meant to rise with Christ.
