Jesus's Favorite Things: Faith

Fr. Mike continues to explore the joint mission of the Word and Spirit in the Old and New Testaments. Together, we unpack how the Holy Spirit has been moving the prophets, particularly the prophet Isaiah. We learn how the characteristics of the Messiah are revealed, above all, in the “Servant Songs.” We also examine the Holy Spirit’s role in John the Baptist recognizing Christ as Messiah, even from within the womb. He is also an associate faculty member in the University of Chicago Divinity School. He has published more than 100 journal articles, focusing on the biophysics of protein structure. Much of his work has been the application of solution and solid-state NMR to the study of amyloid proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease. He has also published articles on literature and philosophy in diverse aspects of medical humanities and bioethics. His teaching includes courses to graduate students in biochemistry and biophysics, medical students, and undergraduates and graduate students in the humanities, including courses on James Joyce’s Ulysses, St. Thomas Aquinas, Augustine, Dostoevsky (focusing on Brothers Karamazov), Thomas Mann and David Foster Wallace. He is currently working on a book examining disease and the theological problem of evil. Other current writing projects include a study of James Joyce and the problem of evil.

We explore the truth that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man; he is one person with two natures, both Divine and human. Fr. IIC 67:  Catholic and UnCatholic Sex in Catholic MarriagesSaturday, May 8, 202110:27 AM<ol><li>The Windup – our common ground, a quick summary of where we are today  <ol><li>Let's get down to it.  </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Most of us Catholic married folk have deep desires within us for authentic, loving, joyful, intimate sexual sharing with our spouses</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>We want to be loving our spouses, we want to make love to our spouses in ways that are healthy, ordered, and holy.</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>We want to know our spouses and be known, to accept our spouses and be accepted, to be loved and to love.</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>And at least intellectually, we know that God  wants that for us too.  </li></ol></li><li> </li><li>The Hurdle:  The shared problem  <ol><li>Or at least, we all had those desires in the past.  Maybe we've given up on them.  Maybe we're discouraged, disheartened. So many Catholic spouses are.  It's common and it's tragic.  But it makes sense to me.  Why?</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Because Sexuality is usually the trickiest and most difficult part of the marriage relationship. Let me say that again.  </li><li>We want  deep, loving, joyful, intimate sexual sharing with our spouses</li><li>But often there's pressure, shame, guilt, anger, conflict, tension, frustration, disagreement, disharmony, sullenness, withdrawal, disconnection, feelings of helplessness, avoidance, resignation and dozens of other painful experiences.  </li><li>We are wounded in a lot of different ways, and those attachment wound, those integrity wounds impact how Catholic spouses related to each other sexually.  </li><li>Sex is the most sensitive barometer</li><li>God wants Catholic couples not to just have sex -- animals can and do copulate  <ol><li>but ordered, healthy sexual intimacy.  </li></ol></li><li> </li><li>Stakes are high.  Our Lady of Fatima on Sexual Sins  Jacinta later revealed that according to Our Lady, “The sins which cause most souls to go to hell are the sins of the flesh,” or sins against chastity.</li><li>For many Catholic spouses, the sexual situation can seem impossible  <ol><li>28% of Catholic marriages end in divorce, and it's probably safe to say that the sexual intimacy isn't great in those relationships</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Many, many others suffer from significant problems and issues in the sexual relationship.  </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>There is no other area of Catholic life so fraught with complexity, nuance, so sensitive to disorder and dysfunction in the married life.  Why?</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Because sex is so often wrenched out of context  <ol><li>Procreation</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Union, the bond of the spouses</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Catholic spouses often look to their sexual relationship to solve problems that do not originate there.  <ol><li>Misuse of sexuality in the service of trying to get deeper needs met -- attachment needs and integrity needs.  Episode 62</li></ol></li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li><li>But you know what?  There are solutions.  There are ways out, even for spouses who are really jaded, really disheartened and discouraged.  And we are going to talk about those ways out, the promise of solutions.  We're going to talk about the Good News of Catholic sexual married life today.  <ol><li>All things, all things work together for good for those who love the Lord.  Romans 8:28.  All things.  No exceptions.  All things, St. Paul tells us, there is no asterisk or footnote that excludes your particular sexual situation.  All things.  <ol><li>The caveat -- for those who love the Lord.  That means childlike trust, great confidence.  </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>So many Catholic couples could have such a better life of sexual intimacy.  That is so possible, even though it may not seem believable, because of a history of disappointment, false starts, and discouragement.  <ol><li>If you feel like you're Charlie Brown and I'm Lucy, holding a football for you, about to yank it away when you try one more time… I get that.  Stay with me, listen a while longer, and see if you find some new ideas, new ways of looking at things.  I know it may be that you've been married 20, 30 years or more -- but some and see what I have to say.  </li></ol></li><li> context</li><li>The relational context influences the quality of the sexual experience between the spouses</li><li>Sexual intimacy is a great good, but there are time when it may not be best.  </li><li>Repeat the four points.  </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>The human and spiritual formation of the spouse influence the quality of their sexual experience.  <ol><li>Human formation of the husband and wife are two of the four legs of the bed.  </li><li>Focusing in here again on interior integration -- how integrated are we in the sexual sphere  <ol><li>That sexual integration is going to depend on our human formation -- and on all the aspect represented in the Catholic canopied marriage bed check out Episode 58.  </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Another leg of the bed is understanding ourselves and our spouse from an Internal Family Systems perspective, which I think is so helpful.  </li></ol></li><li> </li><li>As living human being, we have a unity -- each human person is one  <ol><li>But also each human person has parts.</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>within each person are separate collections thoughts, emotions, attitudes, impulses, desires, abilities, interests, relational styles, body sensations, and worldviews that are not just transient emotional states, but rather constitute discrete “parts,” subpersonalities or distinct modes of operating within the person’s larger internal system -- they seem like selves within us. </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Each part within us can phenomenologically seem like its own little person, with its own Mystical Experiences in Prayer?

God reveals himself to man and gives us the capacity to know and love him beyond our own natural abilities. From the very beginning, even after the first sin of Adam and Eve, God made himself known to human beings and gave us a promise of redemption. Fr. Episode 81 - The Good Shepherd: Tender and Fierce, A series on King David: Part 2 of 4 David is tender to his sheep, and also willing to fight for them. And he'll be the same in his future vocation—the way that he was shepherd is the way he will be king. As he fights Goliath, he reveals something to us about the heart of God: God will go to battle against our giants. Though David wasn't skilled or qualified like everybody else was, he was aggressive in his confidence before the Father. As if to say, "I am anointed, and now this anointing is bearing fruit." There's something about David going into battle without the armour. It's symbolic of his poverty and dependence. His attempt to wear Saul's armour and sword is our attempt to grasp at an identity that isn't ours. If I could just be like that person doesn't work. David goes into it poor, and himself. Jesus uses his sacraments to save his people. The Catechism proclaims that the sacraments are “efficacious”, the sacraments are “wrought…by the power of God” alone, and the sacraments are “necessary for salvation”. Fr. Mike doubles down on the reality that sacraments cause what they signify. They are not merely signs pointing to an already present reality—Jesus, himself, is at work in each and every expression of the sacraments throughout time and in all places. Fr. Mike introduces us to the virtue that makes other virtues excellent: magnanimity.

If someone asked you what the most essential virtues are, you might say humility, faith, hope, or love. But have you ever heard of the virtue of magnanimity? What this virtue does is it magnifies—or makes greater—other virtues within someone. In other words, it’s to strive for excellence.

This is not to be confused with the vice of pride, which relies on the gifts of oneself without acknowledging any help that may come from another person or even God. Instead, a magnanimous person sees the gifts God has given them and chooses to emphasize them in their life as a way to honor him. 

Consequently, every saint must be magnanimous; they must be great for the Lord. Even saints who have the most different and opposite lifestyles become one in the same, purely through their desire to be excellent, not for the sake of themselves, but as a “thank you” to the Lord. 

One way to strive for magnanimity is to avoid the temptation to it’s opposing vice, which is pusillanimity. Pusillanimity is the direct opposite of magnanimity: it’s to shy away from the gifts God has given you, out of timidity. This is different from humility, because where humility is acknowledging that your gifts are not your own, pusillanimity is refraining from using those gifts in the first place.

By embracing the gifts God has given us and using them to glorify him, we are being magnanimous. It doesn’t matter what stage of life you’re in, how old you are, or what your gifts consist of. So many of us have a tendency to ask the same question: "Whose fault is this?" While that is a natural question, it is not always a helpful question. Day 29: Moses Returns to Egypt (2025)

Jesus could heal people, walk on water, control the weather, multiply food, make wine, walk through walls, and wake the dead. Having such incredible abilities sounds amazing, but would it have been fun to be Jesus? 

Though there were moments of happiness and fun, the purpose of Jesus’ ministry was to tell people to repent and return to the Father, and many, including his own disciples, rejected and denied him. He knew that this would happen, but did not use his power to stop it. 

The things most worth pursuing in life (marriage, raising kids, having a deep spiritual life, etc.) are never going to be fun all the time, because love isn’t just fun and warm fuzzy feelings. 

The goal of life isn’t to have as much fun as possible before we die, it’s to live a life like Jesus, one that is centered on the love of God.

Day 357: Truth and Love (2023)

In this episode, we continue our Lenten book study and focus on chapters 7 & 8. We reflect on the many ways Jesus wants to make us whole, by exercising the evil out of our lives, forgiving our sins, and leading us to freedom. We also compare that to what the enemy is trying to do, make us feel alone, scatter the pieces of our heart, and bring us out of communion with each other and with God. Jesus wants to love us into healing and is waiting for our invitation. It is up to us to open the door and allow Jesus to enter ever deeper into our hearts. Day 69: The Bronze Serpent (2024)

It may seem too difficult, or even unrealistic, to be a saint today. The reality is though, a saint is simply someone who has conformed their will to the Father’s will rather than the spirit of the age. Fr. Mike mentions three popular mentalities that prevent us from becoming saints:

<ol>
<li>Our hearts want instant gratification, while becoming like Christ is a process. Fr. Mike’s advice is learn to love the process.</li>
<li>We like keeping our options open, but becoming a saint requires giving everything to Christ. </li>
<li>We lack a fighting spirit. A saint needs a willingness to fight the good fight, especially when the spiritual battle is hardest. </li>
</ol>
