We welcome a pretty special guest this week... Br Kolbe, of "He likes cars" renown! Let's get right to it: interior poverty. Facing our own brokenness, weakness, failings. Not the first place we want to go, right? But here's the thing… there's no way around it. The "secret" way to following Jesus is coming to terms with our poverty—with him, as he gives us the grace to be able to see it and not be overwhelmed by it. Getting to that place of emptiness allows him to fill us with peace and trust. There's a divine efficiency to poverty. The Lord can work more directly when we are depending solely on his grace and not on any false securities that get in his way. It's the only way. And that might not sound like good news, but that's because we have worldly ears. Hear it this way: this only way is hard, but it's with Jesus, he who brings sweetness to difficulty. So go there. Don't avoid your spiritual poverty—Jesus meets you there.

Consequently those who deny this power are called schismatics as causing a division in the unity of the Church. Again, between a simple bishop and the Pope there are other degrees of rank corresponding to the degrees of union, in respect of which one congregation or community includes another; thus the community of a province includes the community of a city, and the community of a kingdom includes the community of one province, and the community of the whole world includes the community of one kingdom. Day 357: God, “Our” Father

If you’re wondering about the difference between jealousy and envy, Fr. Mike clears up the confusion in this video. Simply put, jealousy is not wanting to share something or someone you possess or hope to possess, and envy is resentment toward the possessions of someone else. There can be some intersecting of the two, because it is possible to have an excessive or distorted kind of jealousy that’s actually based in envy, but jealousy can be good while envy is always sinful. 

This is an important distinction because on the one hand we have God who is jealous about us. Likewise, a husband and wife should be jealous about each other. 

On the other hand, St. Augustine described envy as the diabolical sin, basing his reasoning on Scripture: “through the devil’s envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his party experience it” (Wisdom 2:24).

Worthy of note is the fact that good translations of the Bible translate 1 Corinthians 13:4 to say “love does not envy.”

The Difference Between Jealousy and Envy

The Covenants of Old

On the contrary, It is written (Matthew 25:46): "These," namely the wicked, "shall go into everlasting punishment." Further, as reward is to merit, so is punishment to guilt. Now, according to Divine justice, an eternal reward is due to temporal merit: "Every one who seeth the Son and believeth in Him hath [Vulgate: 'that everyone . . . may have'] life everlasting." Therefore according to Divine justice an everlasting punishment is due to temporal guilt. Further, according to the Philosopher (Ethic. v, 5), punishment is meted according to the dignity of the person sinned against, so that a person who strikes one in authority receives a greater punishment than one who strikes anyone else. Now whoever sins mortally sins against God, Whose commandments he breaks, and Whose honor he gives another, by placing his end in some one other than God. But God's majesty is infinite. Therefore whoever sins mortally deserves infinite punishment; and consequently it seems just that for a mortal sin a man should be punished for ever. I answer that, Since punishment is measured in two ways, namely according to the degree of its severity, and according to its length of time, the measure of punishment corresponds to the measure of fault, as regards the degree of severity, so that the more grievously a person sins the more grievously is he punished: "As much as she hath glorified herself and lived in delicacies, so much torment and sorrow give ye to her" (Apocalypse 18:7). The duration of the punishment does not, however, correspond with the duration of the fault, as Augustine says (De Civ. Dei xxi, 11), for adultery which is committed in a short space of time is not punished with a momentary penalty even according to human laws [Cf. I-II, 87, 3, ad 1]. But the duration of punishment regards the disposition of the sinner: for sometimes a person who commits an offense in a city is rendered by his very offense worthy of being cut off entirely from the fellowship of the citizens, either by perpetual exile or even by death: whereas sometimes he is not rendered worthy of being cut off entirely from the fellowship of the citizens. wherefore in order that he may become a fitting member of the State, his punishment is prolonged or curtailed, according as is expedient for his amendment, so that he may live in the city in a becoming and peaceful manner. So too, according to Divine justice, sin renders a person worthy to be altogether cut off from the fellowship of God's city, and this is the effect of every sin committed against charity, which is the bond uniting this same city together. Consequently, for mortal sin which is contrary to charity a person is expelled for ever from the fellowship of the saints and condemned to everlasting punishment, because as Augustine says (De Civ. Dei xxi, 11), "as men are cut off from this perishable city by the penalty of the first death, so are they excluded from that imperishable city by the punishment of the second death." That the punishment inflicted by the earthly state is not deemed everlasting is accidental, either because man endures not for ever, or because the state itself comes to an end. Wherefore if man lived for ever, the punishment of exile or slavery, which is pronounced by human law, would remain in him for ever. On the other hand, as regards those who sin in such a way as not to deserve to be entirely cut off from the fellowship of the saints, such as those who sin venially, their punishment will be so much the shorter or longer according as they are more or less fit to be cleansed, through sin clinging to them more or less: this is observed in the punishments of this world and of purgatory according to Divine justice. We find also other reasons given by the saints why some are justly condemned to everlasting punishment for a temporal sin. One is because they sinned against an eternal good by despising eternal life. This is mentioned by Augustine (De Civ. Dei. xii, 12): "He is become worthy of eternal evil, who destroyed in himself a good which could be eternal." Another reason is because man sinned in his own eternity [Cf. I-II, 87, 3, ad 1]; wherefore Gregory says (Dial. iv), it belongs to the great justice of the judge that those should never cease to be punished, who in this life never ceased to desire sin. And if it be objected that some who sin mortally propose to amend their life at some time, and that these accordingly are seemingly not deserving of eternal punishment, it must be replied according to some that Gregory speaks of the will that is made manifest by the deed. For he who falls into mortal sin of his own will puts himself in a state whence he cannot be rescued, except God help him: wherefore from the very fact that he is willing to sin, he is willing to remain in sin for ever. For man is "a wind that goeth," namely to sin, "and returneth not by his own power" (Psalm 77:39). Thus if a man were to throw himself into a pit whence he could not get out without help, one might say that he wished to remain there for ever, whatever else he may have thought himself. Another and a better answer is that from the very fact that he commits a mortal sin, he places his end in a creature; and since the whole of life is directed to its end, it follows that for this very reason he directs the whole of his life to that sin, and is willing to remain in sin forever, if he could do so with impunity. This is what Gregory says on Job 41:23, "He shall esteem the deep as growing old" (Moral. xxxiv): "The wicked only put an end to sinning because their life came to an end: they would indeed have wished to live for ever, that they might continue in sin for ever for they desire rather to sin than to live." Still another reason may be given why the punishment of mortal sin is eternal: because thereby one offends God Who is infinite. Wherefore since punishment cannot be infinite in intensity, because the creature is incapable of an infinite quality, it must needs be infinite at least in duration. S06 Episode 12: Gratitude

What good does feeling sorry for yourself do? Fr. Mike points out a hard truth in saying—while you have the right to grieve when tragic things happen in your life—you never have the right, or permission, to feel sorry for yourself. All it does is shrink the universe down to the size of you. It blocks out the blessings God gave you that you should be thankful for, and paralyzes you from joyfully giving to others. 

When you feel the temptation to feel sorry for yourself coming on, in the words of St. Paul, Fr. Mike recommends: 

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful” (Colossians 3:15).

Prof. Stephen Meredith examines why a good and all-powerful God would allow horrible diseases, weaving together scientific explanations, philosophical arguments from figures like Boethius and Aquinas, and personal anecdotes to address the problem of evil. About the Speaker: Stephen Meredith is a professor at the University of Chicago’s Departments of Pathology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Neurology. Much of his work has been the application of solution and solid-state NMR to the study of amyloid proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease. He has also published articles on literature and philosophy in diverse aspects of medical humanities and bioethics. Day 232: Glory in Knowing God (2025)

Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem The Four Pillars of Psychological Resilience for CatholicsEpisode 4:It’s the late 7th century BC in Judah.  The northern kingdom of Israel has already been destroyed by the dominant Assyrians, 200 years ago.  The whole northern kingdom lost forever, 10 tribes gone, utterly ruined.  The little southern kingdom of Judah survived, two tribes left, Judah and Benjamin, but those two tribes are surrounded by powerful enemies, idolatrous nations running rampant.    The ruling Assyrians are brutal, even by the standards of the day.  But by this time Assyria is in a late-stage empire collapse.  Assyrian nobles are jockeying for power and position, with palace intrigues and dirty dealing.  Betrayals and internal power plays are the name of the game.  Insurrections are on the rise, civil disturbances are breaking out as factions consolidate under rival warlords.  The political situation was very dangerous and rapidly changing.   The conquered peoples under the Assyrian’s harsh rule – the Medes, Persians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, Scythians, Cimmerians became increasingly restive and hostile.  These subjected nations, all much more powerful than little Judah smelled the Assyrians’ weakness like blood in the water.  They sharpened their swords and were bided their time for payback.  And little Judah, powerless, weak, vulnerable --  little Judah finds itself riding a red tricycle in a demolition derby.  And in 616 BC it happened, like rolling thunder, real rebellions break out from the simmering tensions.  By 613 BC, the Babylonian army has broken free and with a vengeance is headed for Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, the biggest, most powerful city of the world.  The Medes, Persians, Cimmerians and Scythians all join in with the Babylonians and pile on.  It’s payback time for the brutal years of subjection.  The Assyrians have ruled for centuries and they are not rolling over.  It was a clash of titans.  The battle for Nineveh lasted months, with hand-to-hand fighting from street to street and house to house.  The city finally falls in 612 BC and the victorious armies sack, loot and burn Nineveh.    Now we have a huge power vacuum.  The political and military situation was highly fluid, very unpredictable and really dangerous the cars crashed and burned in the derby and little Judah rode on.   Cue the Prophet Habakkuk:   I hear, and my body trembles,    my lips quiver at the sound;rottenness enters into my bones,    my steps totter beneath me.I will quietly wait for the day of trouble    to come upon people who invade us So why am I sharing with you the story of the fall of Nineveh and the words of Habakkuk?  Because the book of Habakkuk is all about a wild, tumultuous time, and there is great psychological wisdom in it.  Those wild, unpredictable and dangerous days are also a great rea-life historical backdrop to this five episode series on resiliency.  In the next five episodes I am giving you a mini-course on psychological and spiritual resilience in our own current crisis.   I’m sharing with you the four pillars of internal, personal resilience in the face of crisis.  These are the four critical elements that distinguish among those that thrive in hard times, from those that survive, from those that don’t make it and fall into despair.  I call these mindset, heartset, soulset and bodyset.  I draw from the best of psychology grounded in a Catholic worldview.  And I also draw in references from CS Lewis’ Screwtape Letters and JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.   So four pillars of resilience.  What are these four pillars?  Mindset, Heartset, Soulset, Bodyset.   I’m going to start with the most important pillar – guess which one it is.  Mindset, Heartset, Soulset and Bodyset.   All of you who guessed Soulset – you’re right!  Soulset is Pillar 1.  But were are not starting with Pillar 1.  We’re starting with Pillar 3.  Yeah.  Pillar 3 is Mindset. Because people are more familiar with mindset.   Pillar Three:  Mindset is essentially a frame of mind. Our mindset is the position of our intellect, and how we apply reason to our situation and our experiences.  For example, a person could have a pessimistic mindset or an optimistic mindset.  That person filters the perception of the world and our thinking through that mindset.  More intellectual, analytical people weigh mindset much more heavily in their decision making.  A classic example is Mr. Spock from the original Star Trek series, or the character of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Here’s the thing – our mindset is dynamic and changes – we can have a very positive outlook at one point in time and a very negative one at another point in time and look at the same set of circumstances.  Our mindset greatly influences not only our thinking but also our behavior.  If we give free rein to our behavior, it will partially flow from our mindset.  It’s much easier to act well when we have a good mindset.   And one more thing – our mindsets can range all over in terms of their accuracy of perception and the quality of the thinking they produce.   Pillar Two:  Heartset.  Heartset is the dispositions or the orientation of our heart, the emotional and intuitive ways of our heart.  Heartset and Mindset can be in opposition.  For example, if a mother can have a solid mindset to go forward with cleaning the gravel out of her son’s skinned knee, while her heart breaks for him and doesn’t want to cause him pain.  St. Therese of Lisieux in correcting the novices under her charge felt great pain in her heart about reproving them in her heartset.  But she knew in a deep and clear way that this was right and true in her mind, her mindset.  Mary Magdalene was heavily influenced by her heartset in how she loved God with deep emotion..  Dr. Bones McCoy of Star Trek also was very influenced by his heartset, which was part of the conflict he had with Mr. Spock, who was moved much more by his mindset.   Heartset is even more dynamic and changeable for many people than mindset.  And it very much influences our mindset – makes sense right, that our emotional states influence how we think.   Pillar One:  Soulset.  Soulset is essentially our attitude of soul.  It is the disposition of our spirit, or how our souls is oriented.  Our attitude of soul.  It can operate independently of mindset and heartset.   Our soulset reflects how we see God, and how we see ourselves in relationship with God, how we see God viewing us.  Our soulset very much depends on our level of security in our relationship with God.  Now here’s the kicker – our soulset is also very dynamic.  It changes too, often rapidly for some of us.  Think about the orientation of your soul when you were in a spiritual high – how confident your soul was in those moments, the deep and abiding sense of well-being in God’s grace.  Now think about your soulset when you are in you are in a bad spiritual place.  How your soul is closed up and has moved aw...

You may have seen the movie Rudy. Its eponymous protagonist is a not-so-athletic college football player who spent years taking hits and practicing with his team, only to see a few moments on the field. Those short moments, however, left him with a tremendous feeling of accomplishment and pride, knowing that he committed to something and saw it through, even when it seemed hopeless. 

The question: is that always the right approach? Maybe if Rudy had dedicated that time to learning something he was naturally better at, he could have become an expert in his field. The choice Rudy made was made out of passion: he loved the game to the point of dedicating his college career to it, and not caring if the outcome wasn’t what he had expected. 

But what about bigger dreams? The dream of getting married, having kids, getting into a certain religious order, entering into a certain profession? Is there ever a point where you just have to give it up? 

There are a few things it’s never okay to give up. It’s never okay to give up hope itself. Hope is trust in the Lord extended into the future, knowing that he will always be with you in whatever circumstances you find yourself in. It’s also never okay to give up faith, God’s promises, or life itself. 

However, it is okay—and sometimes wise—to reevaluate certain outcomes, and realize that maybe it’s time to adjust your expectations. How do you know when to do that? When reality makes it obvious.

For Rudy, that might have meant recognizing that he wasn’t going to be a starter on his football team. It’s still okay for him to want to be a part of the team in some way, and maybe get playing time one day, but reality must be acknowledged and accepted in these situations, or else we risk chasing empty expectations. 

This doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams, or that you can’t do anything: it just means you can’t do everything. Maybe your dream is to have a family, but you and your spouse can’t get pregnant. You might not be able to conceive, but you can still adopt, or be a foster parent. Accepting the reality of your current situation means having a dream, realizing it’s place in your life, and then asking, “Okay God, now what do you want me to do?” 

The outcome may not be what you had expected or planned, but if it’s with the Lord, it will still be good. And once we accept this reality, we will start to see that the real work is being done in our character, and that’s the power of trying. It may not make you the kind of person you had planned to be, but it will make you the kind of person that God wants you to be. <a rel="payment" href="https://ascensionpress.com/products/support-ascension">Support The Fr. Is It Ever Okay to Give Up?
