There will some big words, but I am going to walk you through the concepts and make them easier to understand. </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>In the past two decades we have learned so much about how trauma impacts the body -- the physiological effects of trauma <ol><li>So what is physiological?  Physiology  <ol><li>the branch of biology that deals with the normal functions of living organisms and their parts  <ol><li>organ systems, individual organs, cells, and right down to the level of biomolecules</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>The parts within us carry out the chemical, electrical and physical functions within our bodies.  Our bodies are living systems</li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Put simply, physiology is the study of how the human body works</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Today we are looking at how trauma impacts physiology -- how trauma affects the workings of our body, especially in our nervous system.  </li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Lots of misconceptions out there.  <ol><li>Old way of understanding stress -- what I learned in graduate school.  Most prominent.  <ol><li>You were either stressed or not stressed</li><li>fight or flight or rest and digest</li><li>Stress on or stress off.  No nuance, very simple way of understanding</li></ol></li><li>Today, we are going to do much better than that, go much deeper than that.  </li></ol></li></ol></li><li>Review: Definition of Trauma <ol><li>Integrated Listening Systems <a href="https://integratedlistening.com/what-is-trauma/">website</a>:  Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences.</li><li>from Duros and Crowley 2014:  …what happens to a person where this is either too much too soon, too much too long, or not enough for too long.  </li><li>From Stephen Porges:  Trauma is a chronic disruption of connectedness.  </li></ol></li><li>Most clients come to therapy for one main reason.  One main, overarching reason.  They are dysregulated.  What does that mean?  They are poorly regulated.  <ol><li>Overwhelmed with emotion or on the other side, Emotional shutdowns, numbing out</li><li>Can't control their thoughts, so distracted, intrusive thoughts, ruminations, racing thoughts, obsessions, disorientation, having a sense that their thoughts are no longer under control</li><li>Impulses -- rising up</li><li>Intrusive memories</li><li>They are having trouble keeping it together</li><li>High reactivity</li><li>Mood swings</li><li>Anger management issues</li><li>Intense depression</li><li>Feeling unreal, depersonalized, not myself, identity issues -- don't know who I am</li><li>Feeling fragile, vulnerable, about to fall apart</li><li>In one word, they come in to therapy because they can't manage their lives well anymore and they feel losing control and that makes them feel unsafe and scared.  </li></ol></li><li>Polyvagal theory -- <ol><li>Great discoveries in recent years about the vagus nerve.  <ol><li>The vagus nerve is responsible for the regulation of internal organ functions, such as digestion, heart rate, and respiratory rate, as well as vasomotor activity, and certain reflex actions, such as coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and vomiting</li><li>10th of 12 cranial nerves -- On Old Olympus Towering Top, a Finn and German Viewed Some Hops.  Memorizing the cranial nerves</li><li>Longest nerve of the body, and the most complex, it branches into 11 different directions.  </li><li>Responsible for slowing down all the organs from the next down to the colon.  Parasympathetic response -- slowing or shutting down.  </li><li>Responsible  <ol><li>Heart rate</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Digestion</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Breathing</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Sweating</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Motor functions for the muscles needed for swallowing and speech</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Reflex actions, such as coughing, sneezing swallowing and vomiting</li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li></ol></li></ol> <ol><li>Polyvagal theory was developed by Stephen xPorges -- Ph.D. in psychology over the last 20 years -- writes in an academic way.  </li><li>Relying heavily on the work of Deb Dana Licensed Clinical Social worker and a great writer and speaker - We begin our examination of the sacrament of Confirmation. Fr. Mike emphasizes that the reception of Confirmation is necessary for the completion and strengthening of baptismal grace. He also highlights the vital importance of the reception of Confirmation because it gives us the power to be a witness to God’s grace on earth, just as the Apostles received that same power at Pentecost. When asking yourself who you are willing to be friends with, you’re really asking “Who are you willing to give access to your wounds?” 

With that in mind, consider what Jesus said:

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15).

When we fall in love with God and we experience that love, this deep interior freedom takes place and it becomes the most important thing of our lives—even to a point that is greater than our circumstances. We think we're most free when we can kind of be in control. "I'm free when I get to get up every day and just have control over my life and my circumstances." That's not a Catholic freedom according to Jacque Philippe, but it is actually being able to accept reality as it is. We struggle with freedom because it's hard to accept our weakness. It's quite difficult to accept our sinfulness—it's hard to accept these different parts of our lives. But if we don't accept ourselves, our realities, we either live in memories or fantasies where Jesus can't reach us. This episode is the second part of our series on Interior Freedom by Fr. Jacque Philippe that talks about and the importance of acceptance towards being truly free.

Things We Learned From Our Moms In this episode we honour Mother's Day and talk about some essential things we learned from our mothers. Ingredients: 1 package puff pastry, softened to room temperature1 salmon fillet no skin, bones removed (I get mine from Costco)salt & pepper to tasteFresh lemon juiceOptional fresh dill1 egg, beaten Instructions: Preheat oven to 425 Rinse salmon and pat dry. Lightly flour a large cutting board bigger than the salmon. Roll out the puff pastry wide enough that it will cover both sides of the salmon. (Or use puff pastry sheets) Place the salmon in the middle of the pastry (the best side facing down) and season both sides with salt and pepper (optional dill) and squeeze fresh lemon juice over one side of the salmon. Fold the edges of the puff pastry over the salmon starting with the longer sides and gently press together to seal. Trim any excess pastry from the ends, then fold the ends on top of the salmon. Flip the puff pastry-wrapped salmon over and transfer for a baking sheet lined with parchment paper if you have it. Brush the beaten egg on the top and sides of the pastry. If you feel fancy, score the top of the pastry with a knife, cutting shallow diagonal lines to create a crosshatch pattern, but do not cut through. You need the pastry to be sealed with no holes if possible. Brush the top again with the egg wash. Place on middle rack of the oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until pastry is golden brown. I love to make this with a warm lemon dill sauce on the side, roasted potatoes and a Greek salad. Another major temptation is acedia or sloth. In the face of these temptations of presumption and discouragement, we must respond with filial trust in God our Father, the giver of all good gifts. Our health is a gift from God, and so we have a responsibility to care for it. Fr. Mike emphasizes the importance of caring for our health while also explaining that we cannot idolize our health and bodies as an absolute good. If we do idolize health, it can greatly distort the way we view the dignity of those around us. He also unpacks the virtue of temperance, defining it as, “doing the right thing, in the right way, at the right time.” Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2288-2291.

Day 299: Respect for Health

It&#39;s easy to fall into a routine and lose sight of the little miracles all around us. Unfortunately, it is even easy to fall into a routine and lose sight of the greatest miracle of all, happening right in front of us.

Today, Fr. Mike discusses the greatest gift God has ever given man: himself. Christ offered his body at the Last Supper, he sacrificed it on the Cross, and he continues to give himself to us at each and every Mass. Fr. Mike explains the shocking reality of what it means to eat Jesus&#39; body and drink Jesus&#39; blood. This flesh, the Incarnate Word of God, redeemed the world. His body and blood are what save our fallen human nature and they are what give us life. This miracle, occurring each time we go to Mass, gives us an opportunity to partake in redemption, unite with our Savior, and live a sacramental life.<a rel="payment" href="https://ascensionpress.com/products/support-ascension">Support The Fr.
