Are we confident in our spiritual inheritance as children of the Father? God promises us that if we stick with Him, He will give us peace that surpasses all understanding.

Know who you are. Know who He is. Know peace.

S08 Episode 01: New Beginnings

Fr. Mike knows the tricks we can play on ourselves when it comes to picking something for Lent. So he gives a straightforward guideline: Don’t pick something that’s arbitrary. Pick something that is necessary. 

In other words, don’t say you’re giving up watermelon when you know you will hardly eat watermelon anyway; and don’t give up hot showers if you know cold showers actually won’t help you grow in holiness. We can easily fool ourselves into thinking strictness equates to holiness. Likewise, we can fall into the trap of thinking that the easiest thing will be the most helpful.

Mike reiterates the important idea that every human person is good, but every human person is also broken. This brokenness and inclination towards sin is called concupiscence. However, as St. Paul reminds us “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Romans 5:20). Fr. We begin exploring the third commandment and learn about rest and worship concerning the Lord’s Day. The Catechism points out that God models what he wants for us as he also rested on the seventh day. Fr. Mike explains the importance of prioritizing rest for ourselves because we are free and no longer enslaved people. The Catechism describes how we are to keep the Lord’s Day holy with “outward, visible, public, and regular worship ‘as a sign of his universal beneficence to all.’” Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2168-2176.

7 Fruitful Gifts That Aren't Fruitcake

The desert isn't about struggling for the sake of struggle. There's a wrong kind of struggle; one that's self-reliant, self-focused, worldly. It's difficult for the Lord to do anything for us there. In the desert, the reality of the wilderness slams against pride and ego. Against "I know what's best" and "I'm strong." You get to the desert and it punches you in the face because everything's so heightened. You figure out real quick how self-focused you are. And that wake-up call is good, because we all have a temptation to turn in to ourselves. To fix ourselves. To fix the people around us. To control. We're so stuck in ourselves. Getting after this temptation? Now that's the right struggle. Don't get dragged through the desert, kicking and screaming and resisting the whole time. Use your will to choose the desert, whatever that desert looks like for you. It doesn't matter whether you see what God is doing in the suffering or know where He's leading you. You don't have to like it or even understand it. You only have to pray, "Lord, I trust you and I receive this." Because that safety you're trying to force with all your self-reliance? That safety is an idol. Let go. God's got you.

Why should we remain Catholic when the Church is infected with corrupt people? Jeff understands that the Church is in trouble and being Catholic is not easy at this time, but the Church still has something to offer.

Bake at 375 for about 23 minutes or until golden brown on top. Eat, enjoy, and try not to be swept away in ecstasy. As Augustine says (De Civ. Dei i, 13): "If a father's coat or ring, or anything else of that kind, is so much more cherished by his children, as love for one's parents is greater, in no way are the bodies themselves to be despised, which are much more intimately and closely united to us than any garment; for they belong to man's very nature." It is clear from this that he who has a certain affection for anyone, venerates whatever of his is left after his death, not only his body and the parts thereof, but even external things, such as his clothes, and such like. Now it is manifest that we should show honor to the saints of God, as being members of Christ, the children and friends of God, and our intercessors. Wherefore in memory of them we ought to honor any relics of theirs in a fitting manner: principally their bodies, which were temples, and organs of the Holy Ghost dwelling and operating in them, and are destined to be likened to the body of Christ by the glory of the Resurrection. It was developed in the 1990s by Daniel J. Siegel who sought to bring together a wide range of scientific disciplines in demonstrating how the mind, brain, and relationships integrate to alter one another.</li></ol></li><li> </li><li>Dan Siegel's work is very accessible -- easier for non-professionals to understand, very available.  </li><li>Five types of Empathy  -- Short YouTube Video  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdhMY_DNb1M">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdhMY_DNb1M</a>  5 Levels.   There's an order to them.  <ol><li>Emotional Resonance or attunement</li><li>Perspective Taking</li><li>Cognitive Empathy</li><li>Compassion -- Seigel calls it Empathetic Concern</li><li>Empathetic Joy</li></ol></li><li>I am going to expand on his basic presentation.  </li><li>Expanded definitions of empathy  <ol><li>Emotional Resonance, attunement, empathic resonance -- receiver begins to feel what the sender is feeling.  You feel the feelings of the other person.  <ol><li>Attunement ‘is a kinesthetic and emotional sensing of others knowing their rhythm, affect and experience by metaphorically being in their skin, and going beyond empathy to create a two-person experience of unbroken feeling connectedness by providing a reciprocal affect and/or resonating response’. (Clinical psychologist Richard Erksine 1998).</li><li>When we attune with others we allow our own internal state to shift, to come to resonate with the inner world of another. This resonance is at the heart of the important sense of “feeling felt” that emerges in close relationships. Children need attunement to feel secure and to develop well, and throughout our lives we need attunement to feel close and connected."  Dan Siegel</li><li>Moderation  <ol><li>Emotional contagion.  This really can be overwhelming  <ol><li>Experience of being sucked into the other's experience -- blending or fusing with the other with a loss of boundaries</li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Perspective Taking:  Let me put myself in the other's skin -- in the other shoes.   Not a fusion  <ol><li>Capacity to enter into your spouse's internal world with your own mind to consider the other's experience</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>You remain separate from the other person.  </li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Cognitive Empathy: -- a bit further  -- what does the experience mean for the person.  Memory, emotion, history influences the other.  Empathetic understanding.  <ol><li>So much of our suffering comes not from the facts of our situation, but from the meaning we make from those facts.  </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Compassion:  Empathic Concern -- synonym for compassion.  I feel your pain, I want to reduce your suffering.  <ol><li>You feel the suffering</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Take the suffering in</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Use of the imagination -- what could I do now to help you feel better.  </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Be with the person -- doing flows from that being</li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Empathic joy -- I get so excited about your success -- delighting in and with the other. <ol><li>Joy in who the spouse is, not what the child does -- "delighting in the spouses very being </li><li>Wife believes in the husband's goodness -- the husband is precious, worth sacrificing for and vice versa.  </li><li>Song of Songs -- Joy 1:4 We will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine  </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> </li><li>Review  <ol><li>Emotional Resonance or attunement</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Perspective Taking</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Cognitive Empathy</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Compassion -- Seigel calls it Empathetic Concern</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Empathetic Joy</li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> </li><li>Empathy is the mattress on our Catholic Canopied Marriage bed, which I introduced in episode 58 -- working with that metaphor.  The mattress on a bed -- we want the mattress to be consistent and solid, firm and not lumpy.  <ol><li>The frame and box spring -- firm commitment between the husband and the wife, the upholding of the marriage vows Episode 64  <ol><li>It's the charity.  Willing the highest good for one another -- sacrificial love</li></ol></li><li> </li><li>four legs of the bed.  <ol><li>Leg 1 -- the husband's commitment to his own interior integration, his own human formation, his psychological health, his emotional wellbeing -- removing the beam from his own eye -- last episode. Episode 63</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Leg 2.  the wife's commitment to her own interior integration, her own human formation, her own psychological health, her own emotional wellbeing -- her taking on her own personal responsibility for her natural life  last episode. Episode 63</li><li>Leg 3.  Attachment Needs and Integrity Needs --  Episode 62,</li><li>Leg 4.  Internal Family Systems approaches -- understanding deeply how the human person is both a unity and a multiplicity -- like an orchestra is a unity -- one orchestra, but also has within it multiplicity, multiple musicians -- check out Episodes 60 and 61</li></ol></li><li>The rock-solid floor in the bedroom is the Foundation -- The presence of God -- and an active belief in God's Providence  <ol><li>This is the foundation</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Childlike trust, absolute confidence</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Reflects the reality of our existential dependence and God's paternal care, Mary's maternal care for us.  </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>So many Catholic try to solve their marriage issues without bringing in anything spiritual</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Or they avoid any meeting between faith and sex.  </li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li><li>Why we lack different kinds of empathy  <ol><li>In General  <ol><li>Lack of interior integration</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Lack of benevolence -- good will.  Lack of seeking the good for our spouse and being willing to suffer for it  <ol><li>Conditionality  <ol><li>I'll work on it if my wife does X and Y</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>I'll start trying again if my husband stops behavior Z.  </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Not what your vows say.  </li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes.
