Day 349: Holy Indifference (2025)

We continue our examination of the sacrament of Holy Orders. Specifically, we explore exactly who can receive the sacrament of Holy Orders. Fr. Mike emphasizes that only a baptized man can receive the “sacred ordination”. He then unpacks exactly why the ordination of women is not possible. Day 216: Who Receives Holy Orders (2025)

In the last chapters of 1 Samuel, Fr. Mike focuses on David's wisdom in battle through his prayer and ability to unite the people of Israel. He also touches on Psalm 18 and how wonderful things can happen once we allow ourselves to be loved by God. Today's readings are 1 Samuel 29-31 and Psalm 18.

There are over 10,000 saints canonized by the Catholic Church. Today, Jeff shares a number of inspiring saints children will love and invites us to pair our children with saints so they always have role models in heaven they can relate to and imitate.

What does the Israelites’ forty years in the desert tell us about the purpose of Lent?

Sure, they both involve the number forty—which often represents a time of test and trial in the Bible—but what’s the more important connection?

The Israelites’ time in the desert and our forty-day Lenten fast represent God’s invitation for us to trust him completely. 

Fr. Mike explains, the Israelites did not believe the Lord could bring them into the Promised Land because it was inhabited by a people much more powerful and larger than Israel—they didn’t trust him even after he delivered them from slavery to the largest civilization on the planet, Egypt.

We can be the same way.

We think God can’t give us the strength to overcome this or that sin or habit. Dominic and I take a look primarily at ST. III, Q. 9, A. 1.: Whether Christ had any knowledge besides the Divine? Objection 1. It would seem that in Christ there was no knowledge except the Divine. For knowledge is necessary that things may be known thereby. But by His Divine knowledge Christ knew all things. Therefore any other knowledge would have been superfluous in Him. Objection 2. Further, the lesser light is dimmed by the greater. But all created knowledge in comparison with the uncreated knowledge of God is as the lesser to the greater light. Therefore there shone in Christ no other knowledge except the Divine. Objection 3. Further, the union of the human nature with the Divine took place in the Person, as is clear from III:2:2. Now, according to some there is in Christ a certain "knowledge of the union," whereby Christ knew what belongs to the mystery of Incarnation more fully than anyone else. Hence, since the personal union contains two natures, it would seem that there are not two knowledges in Christ, but one only, pertaining to both natures. On the contrary, Ambrose says (De Incarnat. vii): "God assumed the perfection of human nature in the flesh; He took upon Himself the sense of man, but not the swollen sense of the flesh." But created knowledge pertains to the sense of man. Therefore in Christ there was created knowledge. I answer that, As said above (Article 5), the Son of God assumed an entire human nature, i.e. not only a body, but also a soul, and not only a sensitive, but also a rational soul. And therefore it behooved Him to have created knowledge, for three reasons. First, on account of the soul's perfection. For the soul, considered in itself, is in potentiality to knowing intelligible things. since it is like "a tablet on which nothing is written," and yet it may be written upon through the possible intellect, whereby it may become all things, as is said De Anima iii, 18. Now what is in potentiality is imperfect unless reduced to act. But it was fitting that the Son of God should assume, not an imperfect, but a perfect human nature, since the whole human race was to be brought back to perfection by its means. Hence it behooved the soul of Christ to be perfected by a knowledge, which would be its proper perfection. And therefore it was necessary that there should be another knowledge in Christ besides the Divine knowledge, otherwise the soul of Christ would have been more imperfect than the souls of the rest of men. Secondly, because, since everything is on account of its operation, as stated De Coel. ii, 17, Christ would have had an intellective soul to no purpose if He had not understood by it; and this pertains to created knowledge. Thirdly, because some created knowledge pertains to the nature of the human soul, viz. that whereby we naturally know first principles; since we are here taking knowledge for any cognition of the human intellect. Now nothing natural was wanting to Christ, since He took the whole human nature, as stated above (Article 5). And hence the Sixth Council [Third Council of Constantinople, Act. 4] condemned the opinion of those who denied that in Christ there are two knowledges or wisdoms. Reply to Objection 1. Christ knew all things with the Divine knowledge by an uncreated operation which is the very Essence of God; since God's understanding is His substance, as the Philosopher proves (Metaph. xii, text. 39). Hence this act could not belong to the human soul of Christ, seeing that it belongs to another nature. Therefore, if there had been no other knowledge in the soul of Christ, it would have known nothing; and thus it would have been assumed to no purpose, since everything is on account of its operation. Reply to Objection 2. If the two lights are supposed to be in the same order, the lesser is dimmed by the greater, as the light of the sun dims the light of a candle, both being in the class of illuminants. But if we suppose two lights, one of which is in the class of illuminants and the other in the class of illuminated, the lesser light is not dimmed by the greater, but rather is strengthened, as the light of the air by the light of the sun. And in this manner the light of knowledge is not dimmed, but rather is heightened in the soul of Christ by the light of the Divine knowledge, which is "the true light which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world," as is written John 1:9. Reply to Objection 3. On the part of what are united we hold there is a knowledge in Christ, both as to His Divine and as to His human nature; so that, by reason of the union whereby there is one hypostasis of God and man, the things of God are attributed to man, and the things of man are attributed to God, as was said above (III:3:1 and III:3:6). But on the part of the union itself we cannot admit any knowledge in Christ. For this union is in personal being, and knowledge belongs to person only by reason of a nature. Every family faces their own unique struggles and hardships, in which God uses to bring about glory! A lot of times, we can get caught up in chasing this ideal mom we've created in our head, and be discouraged by comparing ourselves to other mothers who we think have it all together. The truth is that comparison is the thief of joy, and our Lord is not comparing you to anyone. He is only concerned with your heart, and transforming it through your vocation to look more like His own Sacred Heart. I've had tons of request to share about my experience in schooling my children. Since you asked so kindly, here it is! It's been a journey that has spanned across countries and states. Public School, Homeschool, Montessori, Hybrid Homeschool... I've experienced and learned a lot! I'm excited for you to hear a bit about Matt and I's experience of educating our kiddos. Advent with Our Lady of Fatima

Fr. Mike explores the hard battle which each and every one of us must face, the battle with sin. Together, we examine the mystery of us being both free and under the power of the Devil. Fr. Mike emphasizes that if we are unaware of our wounded nature, it can lead to grave errors in our own lives. If we have an attitude that, “since I’m made good, then everything I’m drawn to must be good,” we can fall into temptation and evil. We conclude on a hopeful note; however, that even after we sinned, God did not abandon us to the “domain of death,” and with God’s grace, evil will never have the last word. Today’s readings are Catechism Paragraphs 407-412.

It may seem too difficult, or even unrealistic, to be a saint today. The reality is though, a saint is simply someone who has conformed their will to the Father’s will rather than the spirit of the age. Fr. Mike mentions three popular mentalities that prevent us from becoming saints:

<li>Our hearts want instant gratification, while becoming like Christ is a process. Fr. Mike’s advice is learn to love the process.</li>
<li>We like keeping our options open, but becoming a saint requires giving everything to Christ. </li>
<li>We lack a fighting spirit. A saint needs a willingness to fight the good fight, especially when the spiritual battle is hardest. </li>
</ol>

There will some big words, but I am going to walk you through the concepts and make them easier to understand. </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>In the past two decades we have learned so much about how trauma impacts the body -- the physiological effects of trauma <ol><li>So what is physiological?  Physiology  <ol><li>the branch of biology that deals with the normal functions of living organisms and their parts  <ol><li>organ systems, individual organs, cells, and right down to the level of biomolecules</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>The parts within us carry out the chemical, electrical and physical functions within our bodies.  Our bodies are living systems</li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Put simply, physiology is the study of how the human body works</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Today we are looking at how trauma impacts physiology -- how trauma affects the workings of our body, especially in our nervous system.  </li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Lots of misconceptions out there.  <ol><li>Old way of understanding stress -- what I learned in graduate school.  Most prominent.  <ol><li>You were either stressed or not stressed</li><li>fight or flight or rest and digest</li><li>Stress on or stress off.  No nuance, very simple way of understanding</li></ol></li><li>Today, we are going to do much better than that, go much deeper than that.  </li></ol></li></ol></li><li>Review: Definition of Trauma <ol><li>Integrated Listening Systems <a href="https://integratedlistening.com/what-is-trauma/">website</a>:  Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences.</li><li>from Duros and Crowley 2014:  …what happens to a person where this is either too much too soon, too much too long, or not enough for too long.  </li><li>From Stephen Porges:  Trauma is a chronic disruption of connectedness.  </li></ol></li><li>Most clients come to therapy for one main reason.  One main, overarching reason.  They are dysregulated.  What does that mean?  They are poorly regulated.  <ol><li>Overwhelmed with emotion or on the other side, Emotional shutdowns, numbing out</li><li>Can't control their thoughts, so distracted, intrusive thoughts, ruminations, racing thoughts, obsessions, disorientation, having a sense that their thoughts are no longer under control</li><li>Impulses -- rising up</li><li>Intrusive memories</li><li>They are having trouble keeping it together</li><li>High reactivity</li><li>Mood swings</li><li>Anger management issues</li><li>Intense depression</li><li>Feeling unreal, depersonalized, not myself, identity issues -- don't know who I am</li><li>Feeling fragile, vulnerable, about to fall apart</li><li>In one word, they come in to therapy because they can't manage their lives well anymore and they feel losing control and that makes them feel unsafe and scared.  </li></ol></li><li>Polyvagal theory -- <ol><li>Great discoveries in recent years about the vagus nerve.  <ol><li>The vagus nerve is responsible for the regulation of internal organ functions, such as digestion, heart rate, and respiratory rate, as well as vasomotor activity, and certain reflex actions, such as coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and vomiting</li><li>10th of 12 cranial nerves -- On Old Olympus Towering Top, a Finn and German Viewed Some Hops.  Memorizing the cranial nerves</li><li>Longest nerve of the body, and the most complex, it branches into 11 different directions.  </li><li>Responsible for slowing down all the organs from the next down to the colon.  Parasympathetic response -- slowing or shutting down.  </li><li>Responsible  <ol><li>Heart rate</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Digestion</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Breathing</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Sweating</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Motor functions for the muscles needed for swallowing and speech</li></ol></li><li> <ol><li>Reflex actions, such as coughing, sneezing swallowing and vomiting</li></ol></li><li> </li></ol></li></ol></li></ol> <ol><li>Polyvagal theory was developed by Stephen xPorges -- Ph.D. in psychology over the last 20 years -- writes in an academic way.  </li><li>Relying heavily on the work of Deb Dana Licensed Clinical Social worker and a great writer and speaker - 89 Your Trauma, Your Body: Protection vs. Connection

Episode 53 - You Are Not an Outsider We're all really interested in what God can do for us; the healing, the restoration, the gifts of the Father. Are we as interested in committing to the long-term relationship that allows us to receive all of that? It's all too easy to spend the inheritance while overlooking the relationship. As sons and daughters of God, we're meant to live from the inside of Jesus' heart. Not as outsiders or coworkers or bystanders, but within, where we can experience being known and seen and loved by the Father. That's discipleship. Because life is demanding, and the only thing that makes your vocation and your ministry sustainable is through a receiving relationship with the Father. That relationship transforms you into an instrument of God. Without that relationship, it's just too hard. Be courageous in making time for prayer, for the Word of God — making time for the beloved. Jiminy Cricket said “Always let your conscience be your guide,” but how do I know if I have a good conscience? A good conscience more often is concerned with our responsibilities than with our rights. It is more preoccupied with what God wants than with what I want. Fr. Mike tells us, “Stop thinking like the world and start thinking like God.” The world will have us think our conscience is the final judge on what is right and wrong, but as Catholics we know that God is the final judge, and our consciences need to be formed—in fact, transformed—to abide by and abide in his will. 

“Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).
