Are we confident in our spiritual inheritance as children of the Father? God promises us that if we stick with Him, He will give us peace that surpasses all understanding.

Know who you are. Know who He is. Know peace.

S08 Episode 01: New Beginnings

Fr. Mike knows the tricks we can play on ourselves when it comes to picking something for Lent. So he gives a straightforward guideline: Don’t pick something that’s arbitrary. Pick something that is necessary. 

In other words, don’t say you’re giving up watermelon when you know you will hardly eat watermelon anyway; and don’t give up hot showers if you know cold showers actually won’t help you grow in holiness. We can easily fool ourselves into thinking strictness equates to holiness. Likewise, we can fall into the trap of thinking that the easiest thing will be the most helpful.

We begin exploring the third commandment and learn about rest and worship concerning the Lord’s Day. The Catechism points out that God models what he wants for us as he also rested on the seventh day. Fr. Mike explains the importance of prioritizing rest for ourselves because we are free and no longer enslaved people. 7 Fruitful Gifts That Aren't Fruitcake

The desert isn't about struggling for the sake of struggle. There's a wrong kind of struggle; one that's self-reliant, self-focused, worldly. It's difficult for the Lord to do anything for us there. In the desert, the reality of the wilderness slams against pride and ego. Against "I know what's best" and "I'm strong." You get to the desert and it punches you in the face because everything's so heightened. You figure out real quick how self-focused you are. And that wake-up call is good, because we all have a temptation to turn in to ourselves. To fix ourselves. To fix the people around us. To control. We're so stuck in ourselves. Getting after this temptation? Now that's the right struggle. Don't get dragged through the desert, kicking and screaming and resisting the whole time. Use your will to choose the desert, whatever that desert looks like for you. It doesn't matter whether you see what God is doing in the suffering or know where He's leading you. You don't have to like it or even understand it. You only have to pray, "Lord, I trust you and I receive this." Because that safety you're trying to force with all your self-reliance? That safety is an idol. Let go. God's got you.

Before we can see outward changes for the good in society, there must be inward conversion in the hearts of its members, so says the Catechism. Fr. Mike highlights the fact that societies are made up of people with both body and soul—and the soul is often overlooked. Because we are broken, there is a “permanent need” for our conversion, and any society that fails to take this into account is doomed to do violence to human dignity. Thoughts about the LA Fires

Have you ever said the words from the Creed at Mass, “he descended into hell” and wondered, “Really? Jesus did? In a bowl combine sugar, cornstarch and salt. In a separate bowl beat eggs, then add combined sugar, cornstarch and salt. Add cooled melted butter, lemon juice and vanilla. Stir in coconut. Add approximately 1/2 tsp (or a bit more) of raspberry jam to the middle of the frozen tart shell, then cover till 3/4 full with coconut mixture. Fill all the tarts like this. Bake at 375 for about 23 minutes or until golden brown on top. Eat, enjoy, and try not to be swept away in ecstasy.
